If you suspect that your child is depressed
or experiencing emotional distress beyond homesickness, suggest he seek out the
university’s counseling department. Mental health counselors on college
campuses are familiar with the adjustment issues experienced by college
students and are well equipped to help them understand what they’re going
through and develop ways to cope with feelings of sadness, loneliness, and
loss.
Students often do not realize the stress that
comes along with starting college and everything that it involves including
finding their way around a new place, meeting and connecting with new people,
and becoming more self-reliant all while trying to be successful academically.
If your child is hesitant to set up a meeting with a counselor suggest he
simply visit the campus counseling center website and see what services are
offered.
There may be another service such as a
workshop, seminar or group meeting that he is willing to attend. Once he visits
the counseling center the first time, he will probably be much more relaxed
about pursuing additional counseling services. For most students who’ve never
been to a counseling center, the hardest part is just walking through the door
the first time.
